A Christmas Story-

Merry Christmas to my sweet baby! We started Christmas morning opening presents at our house....only to discover that we were completely unprepared. The camera was dead, we spent a crazy amount of time trying to open his toys.....then spent even more time trying to put them together. We put the lawnmower together and called it a morning. Then we headed over to Steve's parent's house for breakfast. Davis had a ball opening presents. He got a puzzle with big knobs that he could grab easily. He scooted them across the floor all morning. We ate enchiladas for lunch....YUMMY.....then it was off to my parent's house. We opened presents and Davis got a Cozy Coupe which all three boys fought over! haha My mom made a wonderful dinner and we all went home and crashed. The next day we drove to Shreveport to see Steve's grandparents. We had a great time visiting everyone. Davis even found his new favorite spot at Gam's house!

Hand Foot and What?

Davis in the Hospital right before we were discharged!!! Poor little man!

So....We had a blast seeing everyone at Jackson's birthday party. It's been a while since I've seen all the babies together. Sunday we ran errands to get ready for the week. Monday everyone got up as usual....Davis was a little more 'snugly' than usual but I figure I will take what I can get these days. Well at just as the bell rang for school to begin, Davis' school was calling me to let me know he had a fever.I had no idea he felt bad when I took him to school...he seemed fine. So I cut out of school early and took him to the Doctor. Dr. Pope decided there was nothing physically wrong with him that he could 'see'. This meant that we needed to do blood work and the dreaded pee bag! Ugh! 2 hours later Davis never peed and Dr. Pope had to put a catheter in. After all that his pee came back clean....which is good for his kidney issue. Still he had a fever and no reason for it. He thought it was a virus or maybe something bacterial. He put Davis on an antibiotic and sent us on our way. Tues came around and he just kept getting worse and worse. When Wednesday came I just couldn't take it anymore so we went back to the doctor. He took one look in Davis' mouth and determined he had 'Hand Foot and Mouth'. It is apparently common and had begun making it's rounds in the community. To sum it up he had blisters all down the back of his throat, making it very painful to swallow. This explained to constant stream of saliva he had been dripping since Monday.

At this point Davis hadn't eaten since Monday and had no wet diapers since Tuesday morning. Wednesday night I called the on call doctor who was very concerned about Davis' hydration. He directed us to check into the ER. Long story short, we checked in and after many horrid nurses, and MANY attempts to locate a vein to start a bag of fluid, Davis was hooked up and beginning to receive much needed fluid. HOURS LATER, the doctor decided to admit us since Davis was still not drinking on his own and had no wet diapers still. Once we got up to the pediatric floor we were quarantined in our own wing....and even had a visit from an infectious disease doctor! Davis was beyond miserable. He had 6 bags of fluid by the end of our stay at the hospital. The good news is that this virus is like chicken pox, where you will only get it once. We got home Friday and all needed a nap! What a stressful week. Seeing Davis in so much pain was awful!

11 months

So this is just how busy my little man is! Turn around for 2 seconds and he is sitting IN the crock pot! (not turned on) :)

WOW...I know I've said it before but gee time really does fly by! I am attributing my lack of posting to the fact that Davis has become ULTRA mobile! I plan to back track this summer! So here we go....

Davis at 11 months weighs 22 pounds and wears size 4 diapers. He is eating finger foods and has almost completely given up baby food. His favorite thing to eat are crackers, goldfish, and the Gerber Cheese Puffs! Boy can that kid tank down the Cheetos! Davis likes to eat green beans and spaghetti-like pasta...but only if he can feed himself! I load up the spoon and hand it to him and he puts it in his mouth. This month we really started to notice the precise fine motor skills he has with his left hand....which is a change from what he had been doing in the beginning. Steve is excited because he said it's good for tennis! :) Davis is in a stage where he wants to eat anything and everything on the floor! He is literally like a little Roomba who goes around finding all the little pieces of junk on the floor that you missed and then EATS it! I swear I am beginning to wonder if he is going to be the kid in class who eats paste! Anyway, Davis is cruising and climbing EVERYWHERE! Davis can open: The washer, the dryer, the dishwasher, all the cabinets, the drawers, the bi-fold doors in the kitchen, the shutters, and the TV cabinet. He loves to pull all of the containers out of the cabinet and play with them. Steve has taught him to climb the stairs and almost climb up onto the couch. There is literally not a moment when Davis isn't on the move. He is the busiest kid I've ever seen and boy does he make his Mommy and Daddy very tired! At school Davis moved to the next room and is now a "duck". He likes the new room because there are mats that he climbs over all day! :) I am happy to say that Davis FINALLY clapped! For months we have been working on this skill and he would look at me like I'm crazy and then crawl away. He finally did it the other night when he was just about to go to sleep. I jumped up and clapped and made a big deal and then he was up another 45 minutes! Davis is talking quite a lot these days. He says Mama, and Dad, Dada, Baba, Go.....and a variety of other whale like sounds. More importantly he knows the word no...and then does the exact opposite and squeals in delight. I'm thinking that we may need to read The Strong Willed Child! Davis has discovered that if he drops something that I will bend down and pick it up. When I'm holding him and he wants down he drops his paci on the floor and then looks at me like..."let me down woman!"

It's hard to imagine that my sweet baby is almost a toddler! Ugh- where does the time go? I hope to get back on track with my posts!

Christmas in November

We took our pictures for our Christmas card in mid November. I was very proud of Davis he did a great job! The same lady that did Davis' newborn pictures took these. We took the pictures by the lake in Gleannloch Farms. Davis spent the majority of the time eating leaves! :)

8 Months

This has been a BUSY month! Davis is LITERALLY CLIMBING THE WALLS! He wants to see everything in the house. Lately, he has taken an interest in the tile in front of the fireplace. I never thought I would have to say..."Davis don't lick the tile!" I'm afraid he is hearing the word NO a whole lot though. The good news is that he knows that word and seems to know the meaning.

We officially have a bottom tooth. Now when he smiles big you can see it clear as day in his little mouth. (I think the teething is why he wants to lick the cool tile....we hope!) Anyway, Davis has also officially been sick too. He had a terrible cold and had to stay home with the Chief and Mimi for an entire week! He didn't seem to mind all the attention from the g-parents! :)

Davis weighs 20 pounds and is wearing mostly 18-24 month clothes. He is just about out of the size 3 diapers but we are trying to finish all our boxes before we move on to the 4's. When it comes to eating he really has grown quite an appetite. He now eat 4-5 containers of food and 4 bottles a day. He loves to sit in the high chair and chase the Gerber Puffs around. Davis is getting very good at chewing the puffs so we are thinking we might try some other things too.

It suddenly hit me the other day that Davis is almost a year old. It's crazy how fast he changes from 1 month to another. This year has been the fastest one I've ever lived! It will be Halloween soon and I can't wait to dress up my little boy! He is going to be....wait you didn't think I would ruin the surprise did you? :)

The Pumpkin Patch

The weather was so nice last weekend we decided we would take Davis to the Pumpkin Patch. He wore his little...well I say little...actually he didn't fit into his 12 month 'little' jeans he ended up wearing a pair that was 18-24 month! Ugh! He just keeps getting bigger and bigger! Anyway, he wore his not so little jeans and his pumpkin shirt along with his stride rite shoes! Davis was looking pretty cute! We got to the patch and couldn't wait to plop him in the middle of the pumpkin mound. He wasn't too sure about it all at first but we managed to get a few good pictures.

Happy Birthday Weston!

Saturday was a big/busy day! We started the day very early and drove to College Station for Weston's Birthday Party. Davis did so well....he didn't make a sound the entire way up there! We set up his pack and play and he played in there for most of the party. No cake for him just yet! He saw his very first pony!

We left early from the party and headed back to Houston for Steve's company picnic. Davis took a nap in the car all the way to the picnic. He had a blast watching the softball game!

We left from there to go to The Woodlands for Eli's Birthday Party! It was at The Little Gym and once again Terry threw quite a party! The kids loved bouncing on the air track! Davis liked crawling on the mats. We had a great time! We finally made it back home and Davis crashed. He had such a busy day! Steve and I couldn't believe we had no melt downs, no tears, no fussing....Nothing! He was such a perfect angel! :)

7 Months!

Happy Seven Months! This month has just flown by since we have headed back to school. Davis has learned so much this month. He is officially crawling EVERYWHERE and just in the past two weeks has started pulling up on anything and everything he can get his hands on. He loves to pull up on the coffee table and throw all the magazines on the floor...and eat a couple too! He if fascinated with the tile in the entry hall.....not sure why. Anytime he gets a chance he sprints all the way to the tile. About three weeks ago I went to get him up from a nap and nearly had a heart attack as I turned the corner into his room. He was standing in bed and gave me a BIG smile! He was so proud of himself. The next day I went to get him and he was not only standing but JUMPING in bed! What a boy!

This week I noticed that he officially has his first tooth. We thought for months that the eye tooth was going to come in since there was a little white cap there and it was swollen but it has not budged and the little bottom tooth has started to grow!

Jumping....yes, Davis has finally decided that he likes to jump! He can really get the jumper going these days!

Davis has pretty much outgrown the infant car seat. His legs are so long they hang out and he kicks the back of the seat. We bought him his first big boy car seat which HE LOVES! He likes sitting up straighter and higher so he can see out of the windows. Davis loves the seat so much we really don't have to play his movie every time we go somewhere....which is nice after 7 months of the same movie playing over and over!

Food: Davis pretty much eats all baby food now...with the exception of meat and peas. The meat is just gross and peas....well he just doesn't like them! His favorite thing to eat is squash He eats three containers a day along with 4 7oz bottles.

Davis is still in size 3 diapers and in 12-18 month clothes. He is so happy and hardly ever cries! This really is a fun stage!

First Dave Concert

Steve is a Dave Matthews fan....well super fan is more like it. Anyway, they were opening for the kickoff of the NFL season tonight. Steve turned it on for Davis so he could watch his first Dave concert right in our bedroom! I'm not sure that Davis has an appreciation for Dave like Steve does but, I'm sure that will all come in time!

First Day of School

Davis went to "school" for the first time on Monday. I had a lot of anxiety about leaving him all day. In fact I'm sure Steve would agree that I wasn't in the best of moods leading up to the big day. Monday finally came and I got up early and made sure we had all of his things packed. We got the St. Timothy's and we met his teacher.,,,Davis seemed excited looking around the room. Steve and I unpacked his things and the moment came where I knew I was going to have to hand him over. I gave him to Mrs. Donna and waited for the melt down....but nothing happened. She told me she would call if he had any crazy meltdowns. He smiled at me and I thought for sure I was going to cry so I kissed him and left! I swallowed the lump in my throat and headed for the car. When I got to work I kept my phone by my desk all day but no one called. When the day was over I went to pick him up and found him sleeping in the swing. He had a good day! They said he got a little fussy but they put the Origel on his gum and he felt better. I brought him home and put him on the floor in the den. The minute I did he rolled over and got up on his hands and knees! I could hardly believe it! 1 day at school and see how much he has learned!

Each day I left him that week was great! To be honest he seems SO happy to go and play with his friends. I almost feel bad that maybe I was just not enough stimulation for him this summer! He plays with his friend Sam and recently took a likely to Jenna. Last week he even played with bubbles! More importantly Mrs. Donna has him napping on a good schedule AND in a bed! WOW~! God Bless that woman! Having him so happy makes me feel SO much better about leaving him!

6 Months Old

Happy Half Birthday to our little boy! We celebrated by going to the doctor for some shots! haha Poor thing! When Dr. Pope came in the door he looked at us and said.... "So we made it to 6 months!" That was when it hit me how fast it all flew by! It seems like yesterday that my little boy didn't want anything but to be held and cuddled all day and night. Now he doesn't cuddle you he CLIMBS you! He is busy and on the move! Making it to 6 months really is an accomplishment for everyone. We made it through the nine MISERABLE months of pregnancy, the birth and hospital stay of course, the super newborn blob stage, the sleepless nights, and endless bottles and laundry. These days aren't as stressful as the beginning. Likewise I think that Steve and I have a better idea of what to do with Davis! We brought him home with not a clue of what to do with him.

Love at first sight:
Sippy cup, sitting, walker, Baby Bjorn, stacking ring set, bath time, frozen teething rings, the remote control, eating food, being tickled, mirrors, washer and dryer, the dining room...not sure why, THE DISHWASHER!, his best friend baby neptune, smiling, laughing, making squealing whale sounds, rolling, and generally chewing on anything and everything.

Things we haven't warmed up to:
Stroller, napping...but it's getting better, crawling....sort of interested, loud sounds, loud people, toilet flush,

Tonight was Steve's night to give Davis a bath and just as he was about to take him to the tub we were discussing how Davis has NEVER tinkled on Steve. Well....we spoke too soon! Just as we said that Davis peed ALL over Steve! hahaha Pretty funny! Our little man keeps us on our toes!

After Davis AND Steve took baths I found them doing very important things....Steve going through the mail....mostly the ads.....and my sweet little boy EATING THEM! haha Daddy time is more fun because Steve lets him eat things I won't! hahaha

Davis has been able to grab his feet for a while now but his new trick...other than eating his toes....is to keep holding them when I pick him up! Of course he didn't do it the first time on the video but he eventually did it for the camera and thought it was really funny!

Buddies

Today we had a play date with Jackson and Lacey. Jackson is getting so big and almost starting to crawl! The boys had a great time playing with Jackson's toys. It wasn't long before it was nap time for Jackson....Davis on the other hand wasn't ready to sleep. I finally put him in Jackson's swing and he fell asleep for an HOUR! Anyone who knows our nap situation knows what a BIG deal that is! While the boys slept we caught up on important stuff like daytime TV! I convinced Lacey to try out her Baby Bjorn. This carrier saved my life. Davis LOVES riding in it. He just kicks his feet and coos all the way through....where ever I am going! Eager to try it out we went Targeting. The trip was a success Lacey loves it! We can't wait for our next play date!

Five Months!

Davis is five months old! Every month I say that I can't believe how fast it's going but somehow it goes a little faster every month! Davis weighs about 17ish pounds and is very long. In fact when it comes to clothes I have to buy 12 month clothes just to fit his length....however he doesn't fill anything out because he is so skinny! He is built like his Daddy...Tall and Lanky!

Diapers:
At five months Davis is wearing size 2-3 diapers and goes through about 7 or 8 a day. Davis no longer 'grunts' when he is doing his business.....well let me rephrase that we struggle to tell the difference between his frustrated grunts...."I want to walk!" and his bathroom grunts...."I need to go!".

Food:
Davis is eating 2nd foods now....which when it comes to meat appear to taste MUCH better. He has really taken to fruit and LOVES pear raspberry! He is eating three containers a day and 4-5 bottles. We now give him is medicine in an ounce of formula because he hates having it squirted in his mouth!

Sleep:
I wish I could post more in this category! Our little energizer bunny only naps about 30 minutes at a time about 2 times a day....MAYBE three if we are lucky. On the other hand he crashes EVERY night at 8 and sleeps until 7ish.

Activity:
Davis can now sit up on his own for several minutes....even more if he can hang on to something. He has been in this very frustrating stage where he wants VERY badly to be mobile but can't. He LOVES his walker and goes to town in it! In fact we generally bring it with us when we go to people's houses so he has something to do. As far as the stroller goes....he isn't crazy about sitting in it. So we found another way to grocery shop....the Baby Bjorn! Davis LOVES this! He would sit in it....and be happy....ALL DAY! We are still working on the concept of jumping and bouncing....he will not bounce or jump himself....but he really enjoys when you make him jump and bounce. Meanwhile he just 'stands' in his jumper. haha

Likes:
Generally fruit, being naked, bath time...and eating the washcloth, peek-a-boo, OLD MCDONALD'S FARM!!!, TV (The Today Show and Rachel Ray), Baby Bjorn, the grocery store...in the Baby Bjorn, Baby Neptune movie, rolling, his walker, SMILING, laughing, frozen teething rings and making really wet razzing noises/spitting. I'm sorry did I mention standing and walking? haha

Dislikes:
CLOTHES, hiccups, chicken, not being mobile, napping, being hot or hungry, loud noises such as the Sunchips bag or toilet flushing, new people in his face.

Davis has really perfected his laugh....meanwhile Steve and I continue to work on what makes him laugh. The strangest things make him laugh. Today it was just this funny laugh Steve made. Every time Davis laughs out loud he inevitably gets the hiccups.

These days Davis loves to walk....supported that is. We are trying to get him interested in sitting. Sometimes he will try other times he won't have anything to do with it. Here are a few of our attempts! Pretty good I think!

Today we started BANANAS! We are almost finished with fruit and then we move onto veggies. He didn't seem to like them at first but after a couple of minutes he scarfed down the entire jar! I think it's safe to start calling him our little monkey! All day long he smelled like banana pudding!

Almost 5 Months!

I can't even believe that my sweet baby is almost five months old! It seems like just yesterday we brought him home and put him on our bed and weren't sure what to do with him! haha It's funny how time really does fly when you are having the time of your life. We are doing MUCH better with food now. In fact we even revisited some of the fruit that he originally didn't like.

Likes for this month: Walking in his walker, rolling EVERYWHERE....if fact we can't leave him on the floor by himself anymore....I left him in the gym for a minute so I could do some dishes and when I came to check on him, he was gone! He had rolled under the coffee table! haha! Other things he likes are smiling, the swing, Baby Neptune, peaches, pears, apples, his woobie and paci, and how could I forget STANDING?

I've had great ambitions to take Davis swimming this summer however it just took a while to coordinate everything with the weather and the pool schedule! Davis loved swimming. Unfortunately you can't see his little legs paddling a mile a minute under water...but he was! He swam for about thirty minutes in his float before he wanted to just be held. After an hour I was so afraid that he was going to burn that we called it a day! Steve (aka: Mr. SPF) said that I was NOT to bring his son home with ANY type of a tan line! haha

I think he likes the water!

Next year we will get a different color swim shirt....this one blends into the float and the water!

July 4th Weekend-

We went to Shreveport for part of our long weekend. We had a chance to catch up with his cousins and his grandparents. The car ride went better than the last time. Inevitably Davis saved ALL his dirty diapers for the trip. In fact going up there we had to stop in Livingston just like last time. When we finally got they got out this bouncy car that Davis took a liking to.

After we got home from Shreveport we went to my parent's house and ate dinner. We were going to take Davis to see the fireworks at Faithbridge but they didn't even start until 9:30....and we all know that my little man crashes at 8 sharp! He had a blast in this walker my parents have though!

Eating & Playing!

The summer has just begun and I can't wait to spend it with Davis! We went to the doctor for his 4 month check up....he is perfect! haha (Do I sound a little partial?) Anyway, He weighs 15 pounds so 60% in weight and 60% in head size....and 90% in height. Dr. Pope gave us the go ahead to start rice cereal....this has/did not go well. Davis is very partial to the bottle....He has an all out major melt down when you try to feed him the rice. Since the cereal is gross we tried apples.....that didn't go any better. I waited a few more days and tried pears. This went better....not great but better! I'll take what I can get! I'll keep updating on the food situation.

Since Davis is growing soooo fast we decided that if we wanted is picture made in his Christening gown we better get on it! So we took him to have his pictures made- He did really well. He loves to play peek-a-boo with his blanket. I cover his head and then pull it off and he just grins and laugh! Well we did this to make him smile for pictures....that it until I pulled the blanket a little too quickly and then popped him in the face! UGH! I felt REALLY bad! That concluded pictures~ Luckily it was at the VERY end.

We have also been having a few play dates. Davis and Jackson are getting to the age that they can roll around on the floor together and play! Meanwhile, Lacey and Whitney can chat and eat lunch.

The Start of Summer!

I believe that the last time I posted I mentioned that we had gone to Shreveport to see Steve's grandparents. I thought I would post Memorial Day Weekend pictures!

Summer is here and boy and I glad to be out of school! I am very excited to spend my summer playing with Davis. This has been an exciting week....this week Davis found his feet and has been rolling EVERYWHERE!

Oh the things we've done!

It's been a little while since I've updated the blog....going back to work has made it hard but I am determined to keep the blog alive. Sooooo....Davis is three and half months old! He is getting so big and learning new things everyday!

Likes for this month: Grabbing everything! A ball with holes in it, a small rattle, his gym, himself of course, splashing in the tub, STANDING!!!!, Baby Neptune video....specifically the crab the walks across the screen, smiling a lot, eating a lot, being naked, and what Steve has affectionately named his 'woobie' or blanket!

Dislikes for this month: Sitting, CARSEAT, being hot, loud laughing (like the kind heard at bunco! haha), dirty diapers, and being hungry!

We took our first long road trip for Memorial Day Weekend and he did surprisingly well. Leaving for Gam and Papa's was quite a production. I have never packed so much stuff in my life! What made it harder was that Steve didn't go...he left for Las Vegas for John Ross' bachelor party. Needless to say we filled the suburban with everything Davis could possibly ever need. On the way there we stopped twice for a change and once for bathroom for me! He did well on the way back. He napped for the first 2 hours and then we stopped for lunch and then hit the road. Meanwhile, he was happy watching his movie. Although the trip went well....very few major meltdowns, I believe traveling with him is exhausting! I'm glad that I have today to recover! My parents are coming over today to see Davis and then we are all headed over to Steve's parents' house for BBQ. Lisa bought Davis a little pool and we may try it out.....I'll update how that goes!

We had Davis Christened at church on Sunday. Davis wore this pretty/handsome Christening dress and look adorable. I was nervous that he was going to have a meltdown during the service but he did really well. In fact, Jim joked with the congregation that he was the quietest baby he had ever met! He got a little fussy after the service while we were taking pictures. I think he had enough of the dress and just wanted to play!

I just finished my second week back to work. Boy do I miss Davis! The first day was most definitely the hardest. I just told everyone at work to not ask me about it or I would cry. Every day gets a little bit easier. I think that Davis knew that I needed a break and gave me the best back to work present ever...he slept through the night the Sunday before I went back! WOW! Getting a full nights sleep sure does make a world of difference. He seems to be getting into a routine now. He crashes about 8:30 and sleeps until 5....eats and then goes back to sleep until 7ish. This works out well because "The Chief" gets here about 6:45 and Davis is just waking up. I hate the days when he is still sleeping when I leave...it really feels like I don't get to see him. He is having a ball with the Chief. They go for walks and have lots of important conversations about how to solve the world's problems....and they take trips to the "board store" or Home Depot.
Davis is eating 6 oz now and putting those diapers to the test. He weighs about 12 pounds and some change and still in size 1 diapers. He is very long and fits in most 6 months size cloths. He still loves to be naked and loves to take baths. Davis is smiling a lot these days....and at actual people not at himself in the mirror or at the fan! He is so happy and loves for people to hold him. I can't wait for the summer!

The Kidney Story part 2

A couple of weeks after the ultrasound we went for the VCUG test. I really wasn't sure what this involved until we got there. We arrived early in the morning at Texas Childrens. We went back into the x-ray room. They suited Steve and I in these lead aprons and put Davis in the tiniest hospital gown I'd ever seen. Basically the worst part was when they put the catheter in...they numbed his little who ha first...but it didn't seem to matter he screamed! We had to hold him down on the table and watch him....ugh that is the worst. They then proceeded to fill his bladder up with dye and then took a million x-rays of his bladder contracting. The only problem was that Davis kept peeing every time they would try to fill his bladder! He tinkled all over their fancy x-ray machine and most of the staff! Basically, they wanted to see how bad the reflux was....or if he had it at all. The reflux is based on a 1-5 scale 5 being the worst. We immediately saw the reflux. Dr. Janzen called us later and told us that he has a grade 4 reflux.

This sort of gives you an idea of the reflux grades...the only difference is that Davis has two ureters instead of the one shown in the picture.

She said that we will continue to do tests and watch it, but in the meantime he will be on antibiotics pretty much for the first year of his life just to make sure he doesn't get any kidney infections. He started on amoxicillin....which for babies is HOT PINK! Who thought of that? I mean for weeks I was washing out pink stains EVERYWHERE! When she got the results of the VCUG test she wanted to switch him to Bactrim....which is clear/purple...but doesn't stain as bad. Steve and I got sick of him spitting it up so now we just mix it with formula and give it to him in a bottle.

So at the end of the day Dr. Janzen said sometimes this clears up on its own....in fact she said some people live their entire lives with this condition without even knowing. However, the worst case scenario would be that he has a laparoscopic surgery in which the extra ureter is 'retunneled' into the bladder at a different angle...this should stop the reflux and fix the whole problem. In the meantime we just wait. We go back to for another ultrasound July 15. I'll update then.

2 Months

It's already been 8 weeks and Davis is really getting big! He is smiling a lot now and loves to look at himself in the mirror. He has almost completely given up the 'Soothie' paci and moved onto the Nuk...which is much smaller and easier for him to keep in his mouth! I can hardly believe that a month has already flown by! Everyone said that time goes soooo fast but I just didn't understand how fast it actually goes! I will be going back to work in a few weeks and Mr. Davis will be spending his days with Tommy....Steve's Dad....who we are calling "The Chief" since he is firefighter. We like it better than Grandpa!

Anyway, Davis is getting so big. He is such a good baby. He really only gets fussy when he needs to be changed or is hungry. The nights are a million times better than the first week! He now sleeps about 5 hours at a time....so I only need to get up about once every night. He loves to take baths! In fact we try to let him play in the tub every night before he goes to bed. However since his skin is so sensitive we have to put lots of lotion on him so he doesn't dry out! In the past two weeks he has discovered his arms...hands....and fingers! At night we swaddle him up but a few nights he has escaped and I'll wake up hearing him sucking on his fingers! haha I can't wait to see what the next month brings!

The Kidney Story

This has been a big week for Baby Davis. He has had two trips to the doctor this week. While I was pregnant we discovered during an ultrasound that Davis had a dilated kidney tube on the right side. At the time we were assured that this is relatively common in boys and usually goes away before birth. About a month ago we did a follow up ultrasound on Davis. We traveled all the way down to Texas Childrens to do this. Davis slept through most of the journey. We took him into the ultrasound room and the tech came in and did an ultrasound just they had done on my for months. In my head it was going to be much more traumatic than it was. Davis didn't even cry! The tech didn't say or reveal much...which was really annoying. That night Dr. Pope called to informed us that Davis has a duplicated collecting system. He explained this briefly but I was so upset that I couldn't even process what he was saying. I called Steve who was on his way home from work and he called Dr. Pope back to get the scoop. We spent the night researching online.

What this amounts to is this: When Davis' right kidney was forming it ultimately sort of divided into two sections. These two sections each have a ureter that drains urine into the bladder. The problem with this is that sometimes the bladder with 'reflux' back up into the kidney causing it to become dilated or 'puffy'. This dilation will set Davis up for kidney infections or UTI's.

Dr. Pope said we needed to see a pediatric urologist. Who even knew there was such a job! We scheduled another appointment down at Texas Childrens with Dr. Janzen. We made another trek downtown to meet with her. She was VERY nice and soft spoken. She calmly explained what was going on and showed up the ultrasound of his kidney. Basically from the ultrasound we could tell that there was fluid in his kidney that was not filtering down into the bladder. She ordered a VCUG test.

Saturday we had a photographer come to the house to take Davis' newborn pictures. I was having a lot of anxiety about how he would handle this. Since he falls asleep EVERY TIME he eats I thought it would be good to feed him right before the shoot. Well, for some strange reason the meal woke him up completely for the first hour or so. It was a struggle to get him to open BOTH eyes. Davis likes to give us the one-eyed pirate look! Jennifer assured me that she got some two-eyed photos. By the 2nd hour he was worn out and just fell asleep. It was good timing since I really wanted a (sleeping) naked baby picture! However, Davis didn't understand that we only wanted to see his rear end! He felt the need to show us EVERYTHING! He finally cooperated and we got our cute bottom shot. In the meantime, Davis tinkled on every blanket the photographer brought! haha! All in all I would say that he did really well! We should have some pictures soon!

Davis Boyd Turner made his grand debut February 13, 2010! I decided about 1:00 am Saturday morning that I was either dieing or I was in labor! Steve drove me to the hospital (running a few red lights) haha. Once we got checked into triage (the place you have to prove you are in labor!) the nurse checked me and said "Yup, you're staying!"- I was already dilated 5cm. They started my IV....Steve started to get a little light headed so the doctor rushed to get him gram crackers and juice! They took us down to our room and called the epidural man (my new best friend!). Once I had the drugs flowing it was about 3:30 am. We pushed for 3o minutes and out he came! Davis weighed 8 pounds 4 ounces and was 20 inches long. They noticed that he was breathing very fast and had swallowed some amniotic fluid. They let me hold him for a few seconds and then took him to the NICU. He stayed there for the first day and half. No one could have prepared me for that. It was so weird having the whole family sitting in my room with no baby to look at. What was even stranger was having to listen to the family talk about how Davis looked so much like Steve and had huge feet and blue eyes....and I hadn't even seen him to confirm any of this. Once the epidural wore off and I could walk again, Steve wheeled me down to the NICU to see my baby. When I first saw him I noticed his wild hair! It made me smile....but then I saw all the monitors and wires hooked up to my sweet baby and I was just overwhelmed! All I wanted to do was hold him but I couldn't. Saturday night we went back to visit him and they had taken his oxygen helmet off and let us hold him. This was still challenging due to all the wires hanging off of him. As if a newborn isn't delicate enough, we were so afraid we were going to unplug him! We sat there for hours just staring at him. The family was right....he does look like a carbon copy of Steve....his feet and hands are ENORMOUS!....his eyes are navy blue...and he has the cutest hair ever! The next afternoon they released him from the NICU and we had our first real taste of parenthood....and sleepless nights!
When we got home, Davis was getting his days and nights mixed up. However, now 10 days old, he is sleeping 3-4 hours at a time and doing so in the pack-in-play! We couldn't be happier!

39ish Weeks

We are in the final days! Each night has become more restless. I have experienced REAL contractions (which feel awful) the last two nights. Steve is exhausted from staying up all night to time my contractions only to find that they are regular for several hours and then slow about 4:30 or 5. We went to the doctor yesterday and she said that I was 70% effaced and 2cm dilated. She did agree to induce this coming Monday if he doesn't come by then. I was relieved to hear that! She also thought that he would probably come before then. *I'll believe it when I see it! :) Until then we will keep our fingers crossed that this cold snap will bring on labor!

36 Weeks

We are in the final stretch and can't wait to see our little guy. We had a minor scare on Friday when I hadn't felt him move is a day. I got very upset and called the doctor who sent us to the hospital to be checked out. When they hooked me up to the monitor I was completely relieved to hear his heart beating away! After watching him for a while they determined that either.....1) he is running out of room in there. or 2) He doesn't like the cold weather! haha Either way he is healthy and growing out of control. This week he is a crenshaw melon and about 6 pounds. We go back to the doctor this Thursday and will have more info. then.

33 Week Ultrasound

Yesterday we went for a follow up ultrasound. It seems that at our last ultrasound the doctor found that he had right renal pyelectisis. Come to find out that is a very fancy way of saying: The tube that connects to his right kidney was dilated slightly. At this ultrasound his kidney tube was still dilated a bit so the doctor will monitor it and is recommending that after Davis is born he should have an ultrasound to check on his kidney.This apparently is extremely common in boys and should correct itself before Davis is born. So we are relieved that there is nothing seriously wrong with our baby.

He is weighing in at 4 pounds 12 ounces. The ultrasound tech. called his head "Very Sizable" haha and his feet are 7 cm long! At this ultrasound he measuring about 11 days early...putting him due Feb. 2 and estimated to be about 9-ish pounds. Currently he is breech but they assure me there should be time to turn....I hope he does because he is stepping all over my bladder with those big feet! :) I'll keep you updated on our little kidney issue.

The photos are of his face all smashed up in my ribs! Since he is breech most of the fluid is at this feet making it difficult to get a good picture of his face.

The past five weeks I've tried to be very careful about what I eat and do a lot of walking so that I do not gain unwanted weight. With that being said, I had a rather hostile parent conference...that ended with the parent saying "When are you due?" I replied back, "February". She said, "Wow, you are really big for how far along you are!" For the first time in my life I was speechless. In fact it took a while for it to even sink in. I walked over to my team partner and said..."Did she just call me fat?!?!" Cari said "I think so!" UGH- Nevertheless, I went to the doctor that afternoon for a check up and was extremely anxious about getting on the scale. I mean what if this woman was right? Needless to say I had only gained 1 pound in 5 weeks so I felt MUCH better. In fact I wanted to call the parent and let her know that I was not FAT!

As for Davis, he is healthy and growing bigger everyday! He weighs about 3 pounds this week and is laying across my stomach kicking my ribs. I will be going to the doctor every 2 weeks through December and then begin every week in January until he arrives. I can't wait to see him!

We went to the doctor the last week of October and Davis was soooo big they made me do my glucose test. Come to find out I don't have diabetes.....he is just big haha. We go back to the doctor the first week of December. Steve and I can't wait to meet our baby boy! We are looking forward to February!

So as it turns out, Steve and I are having a boy! We had an ultrasound at 12 weeks and we thought we saw some 'boy parts'....however it was too early to tell for sure. Sure enough, at our 20 week ultrasound we confirmed the original sighting! Steve is very excited about his little cub scout. Steve wants Davis' nursery to have sailboats.....so I found some bedding and ordered it from where else but The Gap. I'll try to keep posting....haha it was easy to post during the summer......but now that school has started I just haven't found the time.

UPDATE
Exhaustion has set in! I struggle to get up in the morning....which is completely unlike me. I keep hearing that the 2nd trimester brings a surge of energy and I sure hope so!! As the weeks continue to go by I seem to get more tired.

BOOKS
I bought Steve a book called Pregnancy Sucks for Men haha. (Really, I liked the cover which has a prego belly on one side and a hairy man gut on the other) Steve didn't appreciate it, so I am reading the book instead. :) I am enjoying it because it is humorous and I think everyone needs some comic relief during these odd months of pregnancy. I suppose that is the difference between Steve and I....He would rather read a factual book... and I need some humourous stories to keep me interested. (I think we balance each other out) I would highly recommend it for anyone who needs to step back and laugh at the strange bodily functions that occur during pregnancy. Likewise, I think it's nice to stop reading about all the horrible things that can happen in each month. I bought the pregnancy bible: What to Expect When You're Expecting and hate it! It is not helpful but just causes you to worry about EVERYTHING.

NEXT APPOINTMENT
I know I am not a doctor....BUT....I think there should be more ultrasounds in the first trimester. I mean 4 weeks in between appointments in A REALLY LONG TIME! (especially when you have read the first few chapters of the Pregnancy Bible....which should be titled Syndromes and Miscarriage. Nevertheless, I am anxious for our next appointment where we should hear the heartbeat.

So......We're having a baby! SURPRISE! Steve and I are very excited about the next chapter in our lives. We found out the first week in June and couldn't wait to tell everyone. I think it's safe to say that the parents are utterly tickled! Steve has become the resident baby expert, reading all kinds of books. I on the other hand am just trying to keep food down. At first, the morning sickness wasn't bad at all but in the past few weeks it has been worse. I hear it will get better.

We went to the doctor June 25th and received the first photo of our baby....which we affectionately call...'the blob'. :) We saw the heart beat, which looked a lot like a speck of glitter. Both of us just watched completely amazed by what we created. Needless to say we were in such awe that we forgot to ask all the questions we has brainstormed before the appointment. haha We go back to the doctor in two weeks and should be able to hear the heartbeat. Yea! I'll keep you posted.
